What is the difference between a Psychologist and a Psychotherapist?

Psychologists are professionals who have a Ph.D. in psychology. Clinical psychologists, in particular, hold a doctoral degree in clinical psychology and undergo extensive training with respect to assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of mental health difficulties. Clinical psychologists in Ontario are registered with the College of Psychologists of Ontario. They can perform testing (e.g., psycho-educational assessment) and specialized types of therapy to address mental health issues of varying degrees of severity. Psychologists study how we think, feel and behave from a scientific viewpoint and apply this knowledge to help people understand, explain, and change their behaviour, as well as improve their relationships and overall quality of life.

Psychotherapists complete a program of education and training in psychotherapy, which focuses primarily on talk-based therapy intended to help people improve mental health and wellbeing. Some psychotherapy may also include non-verbal activities like music, art, or play therapy. Psychotherapists in Ontario are registered with the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario. They work to bring about positive change in the client’s thinking, feeling, behaviour, and social functioning. People usually seek psychotherapy when they have thoughts, feelings, moods, and behaviours that are adversely affecting their day-to-day lives, relationships, and the ability to enjoy life.

How often and how long are the sessions?

Sessions are 50 minutes in length. The frequency of sessions and the overall length of treatment is variable and depends on the nature of your concerns and your goals for treatment.

What happens in the first session?

During your first session, your therapist will get a sense of your concerns, your goals for the future, and your important history and background information, in order to determine a treatment plan and the most appropriate style of therapy to be used. This is also a session during which you can ensure your therapist is the right fit for your needs.

What is the cancellation policy?

Oxford Psychological Services has a 24 hours cancellation policy. You must cancel a minimum of 24 hours before the appointment or the full fee will be charged for the missed appointment.
